About this course

Philosophy and linguistics are disciplines that share a preoccupation with language and meaning. Philosophy asks some of the most fundamental questions we can pose: what is knowledge, what is truth, how should we act, and what can we actually say about the world? Linguistics, by contrast, asks how language itself works: how it is structured, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities and over time, and how it shapes and is shaped by thought and culture. Studying them together creates a powerful conversation. Philosophers of language examine questions that linguists must address empirically, while linguists produce findings that challenge or enrich philosophical accounts of meaning and mind.
