Criminology and sociology are natural intellectual partners, both concerned with understanding the social forces that shape human behaviour, but bringing different emphases to that task. Sociology provides the broad analytical framework, examining how institutions, culture, inequality, and social change operate at every level from the individual to the global. Criminology focuses that lens on crime, deviance, and the responses that societies construct to address them, asking why crime happens, how it is defined and measured, and whether the criminal justice system achieves its stated aims of deterrence, punishment, and rehabilitation.
