MA Accountancy
About this course
Accountancy is the language of business, providing the framework through which organisations measure their performance, communicate their financial position, and make decisions about resources. It is a discipline that demands precision, analytical rigour, and a thorough understanding of the regulatory and commercial environments in which modern organisations operate. Far from being simply a technical skill, accountancy at degree level develops the breadth of understanding needed to work at the intersection of finance, strategy, law and governance. At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme is designed with employability at its centre, building both technical accounting expertise and the broader contextual knowledge that employers value. You will develop a grounded understanding of financial and management accounting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance and the legal framework within which accounting practice sits. The programme also develops the ethical awareness and professional judgment that define effective accountants in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and broaden your understanding of how accounting and finance work across different jurisdictions and business cultures. Heriot-Watt has strong industry connections, and the programme is designed to provide exemptions from some of the examinations of professional accounting bodies, giving you a head start on achieving chartered status after graduation. Graduates go on to work in public practice, industry, the public sector, financial services, and consultancy. Many pursue professional qualification with one of the major chartered accounting bodies in the years following graduation, leading to roles in audit, tax, corporate finance, financial reporting and management accounting. Others move into broader business and commercial roles where financial literacy is a key asset. Postgraduate study in accounting, finance or business is also available for those who want to specialise further or pursue an academic path.
