About this course

Acting and politics is a genuinely unusual combination, but one that makes more sense than it might initially appear. Both disciplines are concerned with how human beings persuade, represent, and shape the perceptions of others, and both develop skills in communication, empathy, and the analysis of how power and meaning operate. Acting trains you in the physical, vocal and imaginative work of performance; politics trains you in the analysis of institutions, ideology, power and public life. The combination produces graduates with an unusually broad and versatile set of capabilities. At Liverpool Hope University you will study this four-year programme, with the acting component developing your skills in performance, voice, movement and the creative processes of contemporary theatre and screen, while the politics component engages with political theory, comparative government, and the dynamics of contemporary political life. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you an exceptionally broad range of structured experiences alongside your academic development. The foundation year provides a preparatory stage for students who need to build skills before entering the main degree curriculum. The careers open to graduates of this combination are wider than either subject alone might suggest. Acting prepares you for performance careers in theatre, television, film, radio and digital media, as well as roles in arts education, facilitation, and community theatre. Politics prepares you for careers in public affairs, government, journalism, think tanks, international organisations, the civil service, and campaigning. The combination is particularly valuable for careers in political communications, media, public speaking, arts policy, and any professional context that places a premium on persuasive communication and the ability to understand and engage audiences. Postgraduate study in acting, politics, international relations, or drama and performance is a natural extension for many graduates.
