BSc Adult Nursing
About this course
Adult nursing is a vocation and a profession, concerned with the assessment, care, and support of adults across the full range of health conditions and care settings. Nurses work in hospitals, community settings, care homes, GP practices, and specialist services, combining clinical knowledge with the interpersonal skills to build therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. Adult nursing requires both scientific understanding of physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology, and the human qualities of empathy, clear communication, and sound professional judgement. This three-year, full-time programme at the University of the West of Scotland includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to experience nursing in a different healthcare system and cultural context, broadening your clinical perspective and personal development. You will spend substantial time on clinical placement throughout the programme, developing practical nursing skills under supervision in real healthcare environments. The theoretical component develops your understanding of anatomy, physiology, nursing assessment, evidence-based practice, and the professional and ethical frameworks that govern nursing. The combination of academic rigour and clinical practice prepares you for registration as a nurse and for the responsibilities of professional clinical life. Successful completion of the programme leads to eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered nurse, which is the qualification required to practise as a nurse in the UK. Most graduates enter employment in NHS settings, working across hospital wards, community nursing, and specialist services. With experience, nurses move into specialist clinical roles, community nursing, management, education, and research. Further study at postgraduate level in specialist clinical areas, advanced nurse practitioner roles, or nursing leadership is a natural progression for those who wish to develop their expertise and professional scope.
