About this course

Aerospace engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development and testing of aircraft, spacecraft, rockets and the systems that sustain flight and space operations. It draws on aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, materials, avionics and systems engineering, applying them to the extraordinary engineering challenge of making machines that fly reliably and safely in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. At the University of Sheffield this four-year programme develops both breadth and depth across the full range of aeronautical and aerospace engineering, building the technical capability and professional skills that employers in the sector actively seek. You will study the core aeronautical engineering sciences of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, structural analysis, propulsion and materials alongside the systems engineering perspective that is increasingly central to how complex aerospace products are developed. Project management experience and practical skills are developed throughout the programme, reflecting the reality that engineering in this sector is almost always collaborative and multi-disciplinary. A sandwich year provides a substantial period of professional experience in an aerospace or related engineering organisation, and work placements and a year abroad are also built in, ensuring that you graduate with real industry exposure alongside your academic formation. Graduates work in aerospace and defence companies, space agencies, satellite manufacturers, aviation regulators, research organisations and the growing market for unmanned aerial systems and urban air mobility. Roles in aerodynamic design, structural analysis, systems engineering, propulsion and flight testing are among the most common destinations. Chartered engineer status through the Royal Aeronautical Society is a standard professional aspiration, and Sheffield's four-year BEng is designed to provide the academic foundation for that pathway. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study or research in aerospace engineering, fluid dynamics or related technical disciplines.
