BSc Agricultural Business Management
About this course
Agricultural business management prepares you to run and lead enterprises in one of the most complex and vital sectors of the economy. Modern farming is not simply about producing food: it involves managing capital, labour, and land in volatile markets, navigating subsidy regimes and environmental regulations, and making strategic decisions that affect livelihoods and landscapes. A degree in this subject equips you with both the technical understanding of agricultural systems and the commercial and management skills to run them effectively. The University of Reading's three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich year, meaning the programme develops your academic foundations before giving you sustained professional experience in the farming or agri-food sector. Reading is one of the UK's strongest universities for agricultural science and has deep connections with the rural business community, providing access to industry expertise and research that enriches the programme throughout. You will study farm business economics, agri-food supply chains, land management, agricultural policy, environmental regulation, accounting, marketing, and general management. The foundation year builds the subject knowledge and study skills you need, while the sandwich placement allows you to experience the realities of agricultural enterprise before you complete your final year. Graduates from agricultural business management programmes go on to work as farm managers, rural business advisers, land agents, agricultural consultants, supply chain managers in the food industry, and policy specialists. The sector faces enormous challenges around food security, climate resilience, and the transition to more sustainable production systems, and employers value graduates who combine scientific literacy with the commercial acumen to help navigate that transition. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in agribusiness, rural enterprise, or land management.
