About this course

Agriculture is the foundation of human civilisation, the set of practices and knowledge systems through which societies feed themselves, manage land, and produce the raw materials for food, fibre, and fuel. It is also one of the disciplines most urgently relevant to the challenges of the twenty-first century: feeding a growing global population while reducing environmental impact, adapting to climate change, and transitioning to more sustainable systems of production are among the most important challenges facing science and policy. A degree in agriculture takes these challenges seriously, combining rigorous scientific training with practical knowledge of how farms and food supply chains actually work. At the University of Reading, one of the UK's leading institutions for agriculture and food science, you will study agriculture over three years full-time, covering everything that impacts production in the supply chain from soil science and crop production to animal husbandry, farm management, and the economic and sustainability dimensions of global agriculture. A foundation year is available for students who would benefit from additional preparation before engaging with the full degree. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement provision, giving you substantial hands-on experience in agricultural settings before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates of agriculture programmes go on to work as farm managers, agronomists, agricultural consultants, sustainability managers in food businesses, buyers and supply chain managers for food retailers, and researchers in public and private agricultural science organisations. Government departments, environmental agencies, and development organisations also employ agriculture graduates in roles related to food policy, land management, and rural development. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in agriculture, agronomy, food science, or environmental management.
