About this course

Agriculture is one of the oldest and most important of human activities, and today it faces some of its most urgent challenges. Global food production must increase to meet the needs of a growing population, while simultaneously reducing its environmental footprint, adapting to climate change, and becoming more resilient and sustainable. Modern agriculture sits at the intersection of science, technology, business, and environmental stewardship, drawing on disciplines from soil science and crop biology to economics, engineering, and data analytics. At the University of Reading, this four-year programme includes an international foundation year designed to prepare students who are joining from outside the UK higher education system, or who want additional preparation before entering the main degree. The foundation year builds the scientific, mathematical, and academic skills needed for degree-level study in agriculture. From the main programme onwards, you will study the core sciences underpinning agricultural systems, including soil science, plant science, animal science, and agronomy, alongside the applied and business dimensions of modern farming and food production. You will develop an understanding of how agricultural systems work at the farm, national, and global level, and engage with the challenges of sustainability, food security, and land use that define the future of the sector. The University of Reading has one of the most distinguished agriculture departments in Europe, with strong research connections to international agricultural development. Graduates in agriculture go on to careers in farm management, agribusiness, agricultural consultancy, food production, environmental management, policy, and international development. The degree is also a foundation for postgraduate study in agricultural science, food security, rural business management, and related fields. Whether you want to work in practical farming, in research, in business, or in policy, an agriculture degree from Reading provides a thorough and internationally recognised starting point.
