About this course

Anatomy and human biology is the study of the structure, organisation and function of the human body, from the gross anatomy of organ systems to the cellular and molecular processes that sustain life. It is a foundational discipline for all of the health professions, providing the structural and biological knowledge on which clinical practice and biomedical research depend, and one of the oldest and most enduring fields in the life sciences. The University of Liverpool has a distinguished tradition in anatomy, rooted in a medical school with a long history of research and clinical connection. This three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study anatomy and human biology at a partner institution in another country. The programme covers the major organ systems in depth, developing both theoretical understanding and practical skills in anatomical dissection and investigation, alongside a grounding in human physiology, cell biology, genetics and the molecular mechanisms of disease. You will develop scientific reasoning and research skills, and the programme's strong practical emphasis, including work with real anatomical material, develops a quality of close, precise observation that is fundamental to medicine and the health sciences. The year abroad adds an international dimension to your scientific training, develops independence and adaptability, and allows you to experience how anatomy and human biology are taught and researched in different national contexts. Graduates pursue a wide range of careers in healthcare, research and the biomedical sciences. Many go on to postgraduate study in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy or other health professions. Others enter biomedical research, clinical laboratory roles, anatomy education, science communication, pharmaceutical development or the broader life sciences industry. The degree is also excellent preparation for doctoral research in human anatomy, physiology or related biomedical fields.
