About this course
Anthropology and English is a combination that illuminates human life from two complementary directions. Anthropology is the study of human diversity, examining how different societies organise themselves, what they believe, how they relate to each other, and how they make sense of the world. It develops an extraordinarily broad perspective on human possibility, challenging the assumption that the ways of living familiar to the student are the only or the natural ways. English, particularly in its fullest sense, does something related: it gives you access to how human experience has been expressed and explored through literature across centuries and cultures, developing close reading, critical thinking, and an understanding of how language shapes meaning. At Queen's University Belfast this three-year full-time programme brings both disciplines to bear on the variety and richness of human experience. Your anthropology work will develop your understanding of family, religion, art, politics, and economics as they are practised in different societies around the world, while your English study will range from the earliest Anglo-Saxon writings through to contemporary Irish, British, and global literatures. You will work with some of the leading writers working in the UK and Ireland, and engage with literary traditions that reflect Belfast's distinctive cultural and political position. The combination of anthropological perspective and literary sensitivity develops precisely the kinds of cultural intelligence, empathy, and analytical skill that are valuable in an increasingly globalised and automated professional world. Graduates move into careers in education, journalism, publishing, international development, social research, cultural organisations, the civil service, and a wide range of other fields. Many also continue to postgraduate study in anthropology, English, or related fields.
