Applied mathematics is the art of using mathematical ideas and techniques to understand and solve problems from the physical, biological and social sciences, engineering and industry. Where pure mathematics explores structures and proofs for their own sake, applied mathematics keeps one eye on the real world, asking how differential equations model the spread of a disease, how fluid dynamics describes the flow of air over a wing, or how numerical methods can solve problems that resist analytical solutions. It is a discipline that combines intellectual rigour with genuine practical impact. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study applied mathematics in a different academic environment. You will cover core areas including differential equations, mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, fluid dynamics, classical mechanics, probability and statistics, alongside the pure mathematical foundations that underpin them. The programme develops your ability to formulate mathematical problems, choose appropriate solution strategies and interpret results in their original context.
