About this course
Psychology as an applied discipline is concerned not just with understanding human behaviour but with using that understanding to make a practical difference. Applied psychology draws on the evidence and methods of scientific psychology to address real-world problems, whether in clinical settings, workplaces, schools, organisations or the wider community. At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year full-time degree develops your knowledge of the core areas of psychology alongside skills in applying that knowledge in professional contexts, preparing you for a range of careers and further training in the helping professions and beyond. You will study the foundational areas of psychological science, including cognitive, social, developmental, biological and individual differences psychology, alongside research methods and statistics that are central to the discipline's evidence base. The applied focus means you will also engage with health psychology, educational psychology, forensic psychology and occupational psychology, exploring how psychological knowledge informs practice in each of these domains. Huddersfield's degree develops your ability to translate research findings into practical interventions and to reflect critically on the ethical and social dimensions of applied work. A typical tariff of around 120 points is expected for entry, and the four-year duration provides scope for the deep engagement that professional-level psychology demands. Graduates pursue careers in health and social care, mental health support, human resources, education, criminal justice, market research and community services. The degree provides a foundation for further professional training in clinical, counselling, educational, forensic or occupational psychology, all of which require postgraduate qualifications for full practitioner status. Many graduates also go directly into roles where psychology graduates are valued, including coaching, people management and public health.
