BSc Applied Sport Studies
About this course
Applied sport studies takes the science and practice of sport and brings it into direct contact with the real demands of athletic performance and coaching. Where sport science programmes often prioritise laboratory-based research, applied sport studies places particular emphasis on translating knowledge into practice, working with athletes, coaches and organisations to improve performance outcomes and the quality of sporting experience. At Leeds Beckett University this three-year programme is designed with high-level performers and experienced coaches in mind, recognising that students bring significant practical expertise that the academic programme should build on and extend. You will study the applied dimensions of sport psychology, physiology, biomechanics and performance analysis, developing the ability to assess, plan and evaluate in real sporting contexts. The programme emphasises the integration of knowledge across disciplines, recognising that supporting an athlete or team effectively requires an understanding of how physical, psychological and tactical factors interact. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study or work in a different sporting culture, which can be particularly valuable in a field where international experience and a broad professional network are real assets. Graduates of applied sport studies work in a wide range of performance and development roles. High-performance sport, including work with national governing bodies, professional clubs, and elite academies, is a common destination, as are roles in community sport development, sport coaching, physical education and personal training. Sports organisations, leisure trusts and public health programmes all employ graduates from applied sport backgrounds. Some go on to postgraduate study in sport and exercise science, sports coaching, strength and conditioning or related specialisms, using the combination of applied experience and academic grounding to move into more specialist professional roles.
