MA Arabic and French and German
About this course
Arabic, French, and German together give you access to three of the world's most significant languages and the intellectual, literary, and cultural traditions they carry. Arabic is the dominant language of the Middle East and North Africa, the language of classical Islamic scholarship and a living literary culture spoken by hundreds of millions. French is one of the world's great international languages, the language of diplomacy, literature, and a major European and Francophone global community. German is central to European business and intellectual life, the language of a leading economy and a rich philosophical and literary tradition. Combining all three at degree level is an exceptional achievement that opens an unusually wide range of professional and academic doors. At the University of St Andrews, this five-year full-time degree allows you to study Arabic alongside French and German as a joint honours programme. You will develop practical language proficiency in all three, combined with engagement with the literatures, cultures, histories, and intellectual traditions associated with each. St Andrews emphasises the value of studying Arabic in combination with other languages, noting its particular capacity for comparative analysis across different linguistic, cultural, and political worlds. The year abroad gives you immersive experience in one or more of the relevant language communities, developing the kind of deep cultural understanding that classroom study alone cannot replicate. Graduates with fluency in Arabic, French, and German are genuinely rare, and the combination positions you for roles requiring sophisticated multilingual and cross-cultural competence. Careers include international diplomacy, journalism, international organisations, the European Union and its institutions, global business, translation and interpreting, academia, and cultural institutions. The combination of Arabic with two major European languages is particularly valuable for roles bridging the Middle East and Europe. Postgraduate study in area studies, translation, international relations, or linguistics is also a natural progression.
