MA Arabic and German and Italian
About this course
Arabic, German, and Italian together constitute an extraordinary combination of linguistic and cultural access, spanning the Middle East and North Africa alongside two of the most significant cultures in European history. Arabic is the most widely spoken language of the Arab world, carrying a classical tradition of philosophy, mathematics, literature, and science alongside its contemporary role in some of the world's most strategically important regions. German opens the intellectual and cultural heartland of central Europe, with a literary, philosophical, and scientific tradition of enormous global influence. Italian connects you to the Renaissance and to one of the richest artistic and cultural heritages in the world. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree combines Arabic with German and Italian in a joint honours programme that develops linguistic proficiency alongside deep cultural and literary knowledge across all three traditions. Arabic at St Andrews is offered exclusively in combination with other subjects, and the combination with two major European languages offers the opportunity for comparative analyses across languages, literatures, cultures, histories, and political contexts. A year abroad is central to the programme, giving you immersive experience in the relevant linguistic and cultural environments. The combination of Arabic, German, and Italian is genuinely rare and therefore particularly distinctive on any graduate's profile. Career destinations include diplomacy and foreign service, international business, journalism, translation and interpretation, cultural organisations, academic research in comparative literature or area studies, and roles in international organisations focused on the Middle East or European affairs. Postgraduate study in translation, comparative literature, Middle Eastern studies, or international relations is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
