Arabic and politics is a degree designed for those who want to understand one of the world's most strategically important regions through both its dominant language and its political dynamics. Arabic is spoken by over 300 million people across 22 countries, and it is the language of one of the world's great literary and intellectual traditions, from the classical poetry of the early Islamic period through the medieval golden age of philosophy and science to contemporary literature and journalism. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Edinburgh develops Arabic language proficiency alongside rigorous study of political theory, Middle Eastern politics, international relations, and comparative government. Edinburgh has an excellent tradition in Arabic studies and Middle Eastern politics, drawing on research expertise across language, literature, history, and political science.
