About this course

Archaeology is the discipline through which we reconstruct the human past from its material remains. Where history relies on written records, archaeology can reach back to periods long before writing existed, recovering evidence of how people lived, what they made, how they organised their societies, and how they understood their worlds through the objects, structures, and landscapes they left behind. At the University of Southampton, the part-time BA Archaeology covers the full sweep of human activity across time and place, from the earliest evidence of human behaviour to the complex civilisations of the ancient and medieval worlds. As the programme's current description notes, you will engage with the story of human diversity across a wide geographical and chronological range. The degree develops your ability to work with material evidence rigorously, drawing on laboratory analysis, fieldwork methods, spatial analysis using digital tools, and the theoretical frameworks that help archaeologists interpret what they find. Archaeology is inherently interdisciplinary: it draws on geology, environmental science, chemistry, anthropology, history, and art history, and you will engage with this broad base as you develop your expertise in the field. The part-time mode allows you to study without committing to full-time attendance, making the programme accessible to those with other professional or personal commitments. Archaeology graduates move into a range of careers both within and beyond the discipline. Professional archaeology in the commercial, museum, and heritage sectors employs large numbers of graduates, with roles in field archaeology, finds analysis, heritage management, and conservation. Teaching, museum curation, and work in the historic environment more broadly are also common destinations. The analytical, research, and communication skills that archaeology develops, including the ability to work with incomplete evidence, construct arguments from disparate sources, and present findings clearly, transfer well to careers in research, the public sector, journalism, and education. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, including master's degrees and doctoral research in archaeology, anthropology, or heritage studies.
