BSc Architectural Design Technology
About this course
Architectural technology and design is the professional discipline that translates architectural vision into buildable, compliant and high-performing reality. Architectural technologists work on the detailed technical design of buildings, developing construction specifications, coordinating engineering systems, managing building regulations compliance and producing the documentation that contractors and subcontractors rely on. They are essential to the quality and efficiency of construction, ensuring that what architects conceive can be built safely, sustainably and cost-effectively. Delivered by distance learning through the University College of Estate Management, this part-time programme allows you to study at a time and place that suits you, which is particularly appropriate for a profession where many practitioners study while working. You will develop the technical knowledge of construction, environmental systems, structural principles, materials and digital design tools that characterise the profession, alongside the professional and ethical frameworks that govern practice. Building information modelling, sustainability assessment, energy performance, construction law and the project management skills needed to coordinate complex design and construction projects are all part of what you will study. The distance learning mode means you will also develop strong skills in self-directed study, time management and the application of learning to your own professional experience. Graduates go on to careers as architectural technologists, pursuing professional qualification with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. The qualification is valued in architectural practices, construction companies, specialist consultancies, local authorities and developer organisations managing their own built assets. Many graduates are already working in the field when they study and use the qualification to advance into more senior technical and management roles.
