MEng Architectural Engineering
About this course
Architectural engineering is the discipline that ensures buildings not only look right but work right. It sits at the intersection of architectural thinking and the full range of engineering disciplines that determine how buildings function, including structural engineering, mechanical and electrical services, environmental systems, acoustics, fire engineering and sustainable technologies. As buildings become more complex and the expectations around energy performance and environmental impact become more demanding, the professionals who can think across these systems while also understanding architectural intent are increasingly essential. At Sheffield, this four-year full-time programme combines engineering disciplines with an understanding of architectural thinking and practice. You will develop competence across the structural, environmental and building services aspects of engineering design, while also engaging with design thinking and the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of architecture that engineers need to understand if they are to collaborate effectively with architects. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a combination of international academic experience and structured professional engagement with industry. This breadth of experience is a genuine differentiator in a competitive job market. You will graduate with an engineering foundation that spans multiple disciplines and a perspective on buildings and the built environment that connects technical performance with design intent. Sheffield's School of Architecture and Department of Civil and Structural Engineering together provide the academic depth the programme draws on. Graduates work as building services engineers, structural engineers, sustainability consultants, façade engineers, project engineers and technical specialists across construction, property and infrastructure. Many pursue professional accreditation with relevant engineering institutions, and postgraduate study in specialist engineering areas or project management is a well-supported option.
