BSc Architectural Technology
About this course
Architectural technology occupies a crucial position in the built environment, bridging the conceptual vision of architectural design and the practical reality of construction. Where architects generate ideas and concepts, architectural technologists bring those ideas into technical reality, working with detailed drawings, building information modelling, construction specifications, sustainability calculations and the regulatory frameworks that govern how buildings are built. The discipline is increasingly important as construction becomes more technically complex and as sustainability requirements demand precise performance analysis from the earliest stages of design. At Coventry University, this three-year programme blends architecture, technology and sustainability, as the university describes, using creativity, innovation and digital tools to tackle projects inspired by real-world design challenges. You will develop skills in computer-aided design, building information modelling, structural principles, environmental performance, building regulations and construction technology, combining a strong design sensibility with the technical rigour that professional practice requires. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to work in an architectural or construction environment before your final year, and also incorporates a year abroad and work placements, providing multiple routes to develop practical experience and international perspective. The hands-on and digital emphasis of the degree reflects the realities of contemporary practice, where fluency in industry-standard software and the ability to manage complex technical information are as important as design skill. You will develop the ability to move between creative thinking and precise technical communication, which is the distinctive value that architectural technologists bring to construction projects. Graduates go on to work in architectural practices, construction companies, engineering consultancies, project management firms and local authority planning and building control departments. Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists is the recognised professional qualification in the field, and the degree provides the academic foundation for that route. Further study at masters level in architectural technology, sustainable design or construction management is also available.
