About this course

Architecture and landscape is a combination that reflects a growing recognition in the design professions that buildings and their surroundings cannot sensibly be designed in isolation. The spaces between and around buildings, including parks, streets, plazas, river corridors, and urban edges, profoundly affect how cities function and how people experience them. At the same time, the environmental challenges of our age, from flooding and urban heat to biodiversity loss, require designers who can think at the scale of the landscape as well as at the scale of the individual building. At Sheffield this programme offers a unique integrated degree recognised by both the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Landscape Institute, giving you the dual professional credibility that no other degree in the UK provides. You will develop design skills, technical knowledge, and critical thinking across both disciplines, working at scales from the detail of a building to the strategic planning of entire urban and rural landscapes. Studio work, site analysis, environmental science, history and theory, and collaborative project work are all part of the programme. The three-year full-time degree includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you real professional experience in both architecture and landscape practice and the chance to engage with design culture in another country. Graduates are positioned to continue to postgraduate professional qualifications in architecture, landscape architecture, or both, eventually achieving registration in either or both professions. Others move into related careers in urban design, planning, environmental management, and heritage, drawing on the integrated perspective the degree develops. It is a programme for students who want to design a better world at every scale.
