About this course

Architecture is the art and science of designing and making buildings and the spaces around them, balancing functional requirements, structural and environmental performance, aesthetic vision, and the needs of the people who will inhabit and move through the spaces that architects create. It is one of the most wide-ranging of the professions, drawing on engineering, art, cultural history, social science, and environmental science, and asking its practitioners to work simultaneously at the scale of a doorknob and the scale of a city. The Glasgow School of Art's Bachelor of Architecture programme is offered on a part-time basis and delivered through studio-based practice, as the school describes, challenging students to do, to make, and to engage on a daily basis as they explore design through experimentation and analysis. The programme focuses on the design, making, and testing of buildings, developing the fundamental design skill set that enables students to conceptualise and present architectural proposals that nurture people and the planet. The first three years explore the rural conditions of Scotland's landscape and the built response, while the fourth year focuses on Glasgow, giving students experience of working at a range of scales on projects that address real-world conditions. GSA's distinctive creative environment and location in one of the UK's great cities bring a particular character to the programme. Architecture graduates from Glasgow School of Art work across the profession and beyond, in architectural practice, urban design, landscape design, heritage conservation, construction management, and cultural and arts organisations. Professional qualification as a Chartered Architect requires further postgraduate training at Parts 2 and 3, and GSA's Bachelor of Architecture provides the strong design foundation needed for this path. Many graduates also take their skills into creative direction, product design, and the broader creative industries.
