About this course

Architecture is one of the most demanding and rewarding of all creative professions, combining artistic vision, technical knowledge, social responsibility, and environmental awareness in the service of designing the buildings and spaces in which people live, work, and gather. It is a discipline that must be simultaneously aesthetic and functional, imaginative and pragmatic, technically precise and culturally responsive. Studying architecture at degree level develops drawing and spatial reasoning skills, design thinking, technical knowledge of structures and materials, and the critical understanding of architectural history and theory that informs good practice. At Queen's University Belfast, this professionally accredited three-year programme is recognised by RIBA, ARB, and LAM, and is delivered within a Russell Group university with a strong studio culture in which every student has dedicated personal studio space. Teaching is supported by a diverse group of academic staff and external tutors engaged in international, award-winning research and practice, and the personal tuition students receive is a distinctive feature of the programme. The studio environment mirrors professional practice, and the rigour of the education is reflected in the consistently strong outcomes its graduates achieve. The BA in Architecture is Part 1 of the three-part route to full architectural qualification in the UK, and most graduates go on to Part 2 study before gaining professional experience and sitting Part 3 examinations to qualify as chartered architects. Others use the degree as a foundation for careers in urban planning, landscape architecture, interior design, construction management, architectural research, heritage, and the wider built environment sector. The creative, analytical, and spatial thinking skills developed in architecture are valued across a range of design and management professions, and graduates of this programme have been placed with leading employers from around the world.
