Architecture is a discipline that brings together art and engineering, aesthetic vision and technical precision, history and innovation. Architects shape the built environment in which we live, work, and move, designing buildings and spaces that serve human needs while aspiring to beauty, efficiency, and meaning. Good architecture responds to its site, its community, and its cultural context, and it must balance creativity with structural integrity, sustainability, accessibility, and the practicalities of construction and cost. Studying architecture at degree level means learning to think visually and spatially, to develop a design voice, and to understand the technical and social systems that buildings must engage with. At the University of Bath, this four-year programme is studied full time and develops your architectural design capabilities alongside a thorough grounding in the technical, historical, and theoretical dimensions of the discipline. You will learn to work at multiple scales, from the detail of a material joint to the organisation of a building within its wider context. Design studios form the heart of the programme, providing the space for creative exploration, feedback, and the iterative development of projects. Alongside design work, you will study structural principles, environmental performance, building materials and construction, and the history and theory of architecture from antiquity to the present. Bath is renowned for its architectural heritage and its own built environment provides an exceptionally rich context for studying the discipline. This degree gives you the first stage of the professional qualifications needed to become an architect in the UK, with further professional training and examination required beyond the undergraduate degree. Graduates also go on to work in related fields including urban design, planning, interior design, design management, heritage conservation, and construction project management.
