About this course

Architecture is the art and science of designing the built environment, encompassing everything from individual buildings to urban spaces, interior arrangements, and the relationship between structures and the landscapes they inhabit. It requires both creative imagination and technical rigour, combining aesthetic thinking with knowledge of materials, structure, environment, and construction, alongside a deep understanding of how buildings serve the people who use them. Architecture shapes everyday life in ways that most other disciplines do not, and studying it means engaging seriously with questions of beauty, function, society, history, and sustainability. At the University of Liverpool, you will study Architecture over three years, full time, as the first stage of your architectural education, with a year abroad built into the programme. This year abroad offers exposure to different architectural traditions, urban environments, and ways of thinking about the built environment that can genuinely broaden your practice and perspective. The three-year degree at Liverpool corresponds to the first part of architectural education, leading to Part 1 of the Royal Institute of British Architects qualification, with the degree developed alongside further professional training and Part 2 study for those pursuing chartered status. You will develop design skills through studio projects, learning to think spatially and to move from conceptual ideas to detailed proposals. Alongside studio work you will study architectural history and theory, building technology, environmental design, and the professional and legal context in which architects practise. The architectural degree opens pathways into architecture itself, urban design, landscape architecture, interior design, heritage conservation, and the property and construction sectors. Some graduates move into related fields such as product design, film and stage design, or arts administration. Many continue into Part 2 and Part 3 of architectural training to qualify as chartered architects. Further postgraduate options include specialist study in urban design, sustainable architecture, computational design, and conservation.
