About this course

Art history is one of the most intellectually rich disciplines in the humanities, examining the visual arts from ancient times to the present through the lenses of cultural history, philosophy, criticism and theory. It asks how images and objects are made, what they mean, how they have been used and understood across different cultures and periods, and how the discipline of art history itself has changed in its methods and assumptions. Studied alongside creative industries business management, it gives you both the critical and historical grounding to understand culture in depth and the commercial knowledge to work in the industries that produce, distribute and sustain it. At Liverpool Hope University this three-year full-time programme allows you to develop your art historical knowledge and critical skills alongside an understanding of the business of the creative industries. In art history you will engage with painting, sculpture, photography, film, architecture and design across multiple periods and cultural contexts, developing the skills of visual analysis, historical argument and written communication that the discipline demands. In creative industries business management you will study the structures and economics of the creative sector, including cultural policy, intellectual property, funding models, marketing and management. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as built-in work placement opportunities, ensuring that you graduate with substantial professional experience alongside your academic knowledge. Graduates go on to work in galleries, museums, auction houses, arts journalism, cultural policy, arts management, publishing, the heritage sector, creative consultancy and education. The combination of art historical knowledge and business understanding is particularly valuable in roles that require both cultural literacy and commercial awareness. Many continue to postgraduate study in art history, curatorship, arts management or cultural studies. The placement and year abroad built into this programme significantly strengthen both your professional profile and your understanding of the international dimensions of cultural life.
