MEng Artificial Intelligence
About this course
Artificial intelligence is transforming how machines learn, reason, and interact with the world, and the discipline underpinning that transformation encompasses machine learning, neural networks, computer vision, natural language processing, automated reasoning, and the design of intelligent systems that can adapt to their environment. At a time when AI is reshaping industries from healthcare and finance to logistics and entertainment, the ability to understand, design, and critically evaluate these systems is one of the most valuable capabilities a graduate can have. At the University of Southampton, one of the UK's strongest research universities for computer science and AI, you will study artificial intelligence over four years full-time, developing a rigorous grounding in both the theory and the practice of intelligent systems. You will learn to design and build machine learning systems, to work with large datasets, to apply AI techniques to real-world problems, and to think carefully about the implications and limitations of AI in different contexts. Southampton's research-active environment means you will learn from academics who are working at the frontier of the discipline, and the four-year programme gives you the depth of training that a rapidly evolving field requires. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points. Artificial intelligence graduates are among the most sought-after in the current job market. Technology companies, research laboratories, financial services, healthcare, defence, autonomous vehicles, and robotics all recruit AI engineers, machine learning researchers, and data scientists. The combination of mathematical rigour, programming skill, and understanding of intelligent systems design that this degree develops prepares you for a wide range of technical roles, as well as for postgraduate research in AI or related disciplines.
