LLB Bachelor of Laws
About this course
Law is one of the most intellectually demanding disciplines available to university students, and one of the most practically consequential. It asks you to read complex texts with precision, to understand how legal rules are created, interpreted and applied, to construct arguments that are both logically coherent and grounded in authority, and to think clearly about justice, rights, power and the organisation of society. Beyond preparing you for legal practice, a law degree develops analytical and communication abilities that are valued across almost every professional field. This four-year full-time LLB at Glasgow Caledonian University provides a qualifying law degree under Scots law, which has its own distinct tradition rooted in Roman law and civil law principles alongside the common law influences shared with England. You will study the foundations of the Scottish legal system, covering areas including contract, delict, criminal law, property and constitutional law, while developing the research, reasoning and advocacy skills that legal practice demands. The four-year structure allows greater depth of engagement with the subject than a three-year programme. Graduates who wish to become solicitors in Scotland proceed to professional training after the degree, and the LLB provides the academic foundation for that route. Graduates who pursue advocacy work toward the Scottish Bar. Law graduates also work extensively in roles where legal knowledge and analytical skill are valued without requiring formal legal practice: compliance, financial services, the civil service, corporate management, policy, publishing and international organisations all regularly recruit lawyers and law graduates. The degree opens a wide range of graduate careers for those who choose not to enter formal practice.
