MBChB Bachelor Of Medicine Bachelor Of Surgery With Foundation Year
About this course
Medicine is the discipline dedicated to understanding the human body in health and disease, and to applying that understanding to care for patients. It is one of the most demanding degrees available, combining deep scientific knowledge in areas such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology with the clinical skills, communication abilities, and professional judgement that patient care requires. It is also one of the most personally demanding, requiring sustained commitment, resilience, and empathy throughout a career that can span many decades. At Edge Hill University, this six-year full-time programme includes a foundation year at the start, providing an integrated pathway for students who need additional academic preparation before progressing to the full MBChB degree. The foundation year develops your understanding of the key scientific concepts underpinning medicine and ensures you meet the academic standard required for the clinical programme that follows. From there, you will move through the preclinical and clinical phases of the degree, gaining the knowledge and skills needed to function as a junior doctor on graduation. Clinical placements in hospitals and community settings are central to the later years of the programme, giving you direct patient contact under supervision and building the practical competence that makes the difference between knowing medicine and being able to practise it. Graduating with a medical degree and completing the Foundation Programme qualifies you to work as a doctor in the NHS and to begin the process of choosing and training for a medical specialty. Medicine offers careers across a wide spectrum, from general practice and hospital medicine to surgery, psychiatry, public health, research, and medical education. The intellectual rigour, scientific depth, and clinical skills developed in this degree also support roles in medical research, healthcare management, policy, and international health.
