BSc Biochemistry with a Foundation Year
About this course
Biochemistry is concerned with the chemical processes that occur within living organisms, examining how cells work at the sub-cellular and molecular level. It is the foundational science of modern medicine and biotechnology, providing the mechanistic understanding of how proteins fold and function, how genes are expressed and regulated, how metabolism operates, and how cells communicate and respond to their environment. The discipline has been transformed by the development of genomic sequencing, structural biology, and computational methods that allow researchers to investigate biological systems at unprecedented scale and resolution. At Swansea University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a solid preparation in chemistry and biology before the main degree begins. The foundation year is designed for students who have the potential and motivation to succeed in biochemistry at degree level but need additional preparation in the relevant sciences. You will study the chemical processes of living systems in depth: molecular biology, enzyme biochemistry, metabolism, cell signalling, genetics, and research methods. Swansea's strong research environment in biomedical and life sciences informs the teaching throughout, giving you access to current developments in the field. You will develop practical laboratory skills alongside the theoretical understanding needed to interpret and design experiments, and the scientific communication skills needed to write clearly about complex biological processes. Graduates go on to work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical and NHS laboratories, food science, environmental science, and a range of other life sciences roles. Many pursue postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, or medicine. The scientific and practical training the degree provides is valued across the full range of sectors where biological and chemical knowledge is applied.
