BSc Biochemistry with Year Abroad
About this course
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that underlie living systems. It explores how molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids are structured, how they interact, how they are synthesised and degraded within cells, and how these processes give rise to the complexity of biological life. Understanding biochemistry is fundamental to medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, agricultural science, and biotechnology, and it sits at the heart of the life sciences. At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad as an integral part of the degree. You will study the core disciplines of chemistry and biology in their first year, developing a strong foundation before moving into the biochemical specialisms that connect them. Topics will include molecular biology, metabolism, enzyme kinetics, cell biology, genetics, and structural biochemistry. The year abroad, embedded within the degree, gives you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas, broadening your scientific education and developing the international awareness that is increasingly valued in the life sciences professions. Biochemistry trains you to think at the interface of two major scientific disciplines, developing analytical rigour, laboratory skills, and the ability to interpret complex experimental data. Hull's programme ensures you graduate with both the academic knowledge and the breadth of perspective that a year studying in another country provides. Graduates from biochemistry programmes go on to work in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clinical research, food science, public health, and academic research. Many pursue postgraduate study, including MSc or PhD programmes, which are often required for research and senior technical roles. The degree is also a strong preparation for graduate entry to medicine or dentistry.
