BSc Biological Science
About this course
Biological science is the study of life in all its forms and at all scales, from the molecular machinery inside cells to the dynamics of ecosystems and the evolutionary processes that have shaped the diversity of living organisms over billions of years. It is a discipline that sits at the heart of some of the most important questions facing humanity, including the mechanisms of disease, the basis of biodiversity, the effects of environmental change and the development of new medicines and biotechnologies. At Edinburgh Napier University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you experience of biological science in an international academic context. You will study across a range of biological disciplines, including microbiology, animal biology and immunology, with a curriculum designed to be flexible enough to allow you to specialise in the areas that interest you most as your degree progresses. The programme combines rigorous theoretical study with practical skills development through laboratory work and field studies, preparing you to handle biological data, design experiments and contribute to scientific inquiry in both academic and applied settings. You will be taught and supported by faculty who are actively engaged in research, and the programme is designed to connect you with the wider scientific community. Biological science graduates work across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental science, food and agriculture, conservation, education and research. Many go on to postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level, specialising in areas such as molecular biology, microbiology, ecology, immunology or biomedical science. The analytical, laboratory and research skills developed through a biological sciences degree are valued in science communication, policy, intellectual property and the growing field of life sciences technology. The breadth of the degree gives you a strong foundation from which to move in many different directions.
