MSci Biological Sciences (Undergraduate Masters)
About this course
Biological sciences at undergraduate masters level is designed for students who want to engage with the subject at the highest level of intellectual rigour, integrating the depth of a research master's qualification with the formative experience of an undergraduate degree. The biological sciences encompass the study of living organisms across all scales, from molecular and cellular mechanisms to the ecology of populations and ecosystems, and an undergraduate masters gives you the time and scope to develop genuine expertise in this field. Queen's University Belfast offers this four-year full-time integrated masters programme, drawing on a strong tradition in biological research and a well-developed life sciences environment in Northern Ireland. The programme builds from core foundations in cell biology, genetics, evolution, physiology and ecology through to advanced topics in the final years, where the masters level content introduces you to research methods, data analysis and independent investigation at a higher level than a standard BSc. You will develop laboratory and fieldwork skills alongside theoretical knowledge, and the masters component allows you to engage with the primary scientific literature and with research questions in a more direct and demanding way than undergraduate study alone typically requires. Biological sciences at this level trains rigorous scientific thinking, experimental design and analysis, the ability to evaluate complex evidence and the communication skills to present scientific work clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences. The integrated masters format also develops the intellectual independence and research literacy that doctoral study and senior professional roles increasingly require. Graduates are well placed for doctoral research in the biological sciences, for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical laboratory science, environmental consultancy, conservation, public health, science communication and education, and for the range of professional and policy roles in the life sciences sector that value advanced scientific training.
