BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the study of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the dynamics of ecosystems spanning continents. It is a discipline driven by curiosity about how living things function, how they evolved, how they interact with each other and their environments, and how biological knowledge can be applied to medicine, conservation, agriculture, and biotechnology. Few sciences are changing as fast or touching as many aspects of human society. At Edge Hill University this three-year, full-time BSc covers cellular, molecular, genetic, and whole-organism biology, giving you a broad and integrated picture of the subject. You will develop practical skills in the laboratory and in the field, carrying out fieldwork in rich ecological locations as part of your training. The programme is designed to show you how modern biology shapes and challenges society, making connections between the science you study and its commercial, research, and environmental implications. A sandwich year and a year abroad are built into the course, and work placement opportunities are also available, meaning you can gain professional experience in research, industry, or conservation settings as well as broadening your horizons through study or work overseas. Graduates of biology go on to careers across a wide range of sectors. Many move into healthcare, clinical research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and the life sciences industry. Others work in ecology, conservation, environmental consultancy, or the public sector in roles related to public health or environmental regulation. Teaching and science communication are also common paths. Many graduates continue into postgraduate study, pursuing Masters or doctoral programmes in specialist areas such as genetics, ecology, microbiology, or cell biology, or entering professional training in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science.
