BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the scientific study of life in all its extraordinary diversity, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the vast ecological networks that sustain the planet. It is a discipline built on curiosity about how living things are structured, how they function, how they reproduce, how they evolve, and how they interact with one another and their environments. The relevance of biology to human welfare has never been more apparent, as questions about climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, and disease sit at the centre of the most pressing challenges of our time. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year, full-time programme takes you across the full breadth of the biological sciences, from the cellular and molecular level through to whole organisms and ecosystems. You will study cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology, developing both a deep theoretical understanding and the practical laboratory skills that biological research depends on. The University's location in west Wales offers immediate access to a rich variety of habitats, from upland moorland and ancient woodland to the Cardigan Bay coast, making fieldwork an integral part of your experience. You will learn how biology can be applied to real challenges, including those posed by environmental change, and develop the critical thinking and data interpretation skills that employers in research, conservation, healthcare, and industry value highly. Biology graduates pursue careers across a remarkably broad range of fields. Many move into biomedical research, environmental consultancy, conservation, ecological surveying, and agricultural science. Others work in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, teaching, and science communication. The discipline also provides strong preparation for postgraduate study in areas such as ecology, genetics, molecular biology, medicine, or veterinary science. Whatever direction you choose, the scientific rigour and investigative mindset developed through a biology degree are genuinely transferable.
