About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its extraordinary diversity and complexity, concerned with understanding how living organisms are structured, how they function at the molecular and cellular level, how they develop across their lifespans, how they interact with each other and with their environments, and how life has evolved over billions of years into the forms we see today. It is one of the broadest and most rapidly advancing of the sciences, encompassing everything from the mechanisms of gene expression inside individual cells to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme is built around a broad foundation in animal, plant, and marine biology before you specialise in the areas that interest you most, as the current description reflects. Aberdeen's location in the northeast of Scotland, close to exceptional marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats, makes it a particularly strong setting for ecology, environmental biology, and marine science, and the programme takes full advantage of these opportunities for field-based learning.
