BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science is the laboratory-based discipline that underpins modern medicine. Biomedical scientists investigate disease, develop diagnostic tests, analyse blood and tissue samples, and contribute to the research that produces new treatments. Without the work of biomedical scientists, clinical medicine would lack the diagnostic accuracy and evidence base on which patient care depends. It is a field that combines rigorous laboratory science with real-world healthcare application, and it sits at the heart of the NHS's diagnostic infrastructure. At the University of Northampton, biomedical science is available as a part-time programme, making it accessible to students who are managing work or other commitments alongside their studies. You will study the core disciplines of the field, including clinical biochemistry, haematology, medical microbiology, immunology, histopathology and cell biology. Laboratory skills are fundamental to the programme, and you will develop competence in a range of techniques used in clinical and research settings. Part-time study allows you to progress through the material at a pace that suits your circumstances while building the knowledge base required for professional practice. Graduates from accredited biomedical science programmes can apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is the route into practice as a registered biomedical scientist in NHS and private laboratory settings. Graduates work in hospital pathology departments, blood transfusion services, research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and public health organisations such as the UK Health Security Agency. Many also continue to postgraduate study in biomedical research, clinical science, or specialist laboratory disciplines. The part-time route is also commonly taken by healthcare support workers seeking to formalise and advance their laboratory knowledge.
