About this course

Biomedical science is the scientific study of the mechanisms of human health and disease. It brings together biology, chemistry, physiology, genetics, and pathology to understand how the body works at the cellular and molecular level, what goes wrong when disease occurs, and how those processes can be diagnosed, monitored, and ultimately treated. As medicine becomes increasingly dependent on laboratory science and precision diagnostics, the role of the biomedical scientist in healthcare and research continues to grow in importance. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time programme is structured to build your knowledge progressively, beginning with foundational science and advancing steadily into specialised topics and independent research. You will explore cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, haematology, pharmacology, and the molecular basis of disease, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills as you go. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international institution and broaden your scientific perspective. The year abroad also develops your adaptability and your capacity to work in diverse research and clinical environments, both of which are increasingly valued by employers and postgraduate admissions tutors. Aberdeen's location and scientific research culture provide a stimulating environment in which to develop as a scientist. A typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the demanding academic nature of the programme. Graduates from biomedical science programmes go on to careers in NHS clinical laboratory services, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, medical research institutions, public health agencies, and science communication. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in areas such as medical research, clinical biochemistry, immunology, genetics, or medicine, using their undergraduate degree as a springboard into more specialised roles. Biomedical science is also a strong foundation for graduate entry to healthcare professions including medicine and pharmacy.
