About this course

Bioveterinary science examines the biological and scientific processes that underpin animal health and disease, sitting between the life sciences and veterinary medicine to develop the diagnostic, microbiological and clinical understanding needed by those who work in animal health, research and the biological industries. Unlike a veterinary degree, which trains practitioners to diagnose and treat individual animals, bioveterinary science takes a broader scientific perspective, examining the mechanisms of disease, the immune system, pathogens, physical therapies and the biomedical sciences that underlie clinical practice. At Hartpury University this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry into the degree for students who need additional preparation in biological science. You will develop your expertise across disease diagnosis, microbiology, physical therapies, rehabilitation and the biological sciences relevant to animal health, building both laboratory skills and conceptual understanding of how disease processes work at the cellular and systemic level. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in veterinary, scientific or animal health settings before graduation. Hartpury's strong connections with veterinary practices, equine centres and animal science organisations provide rich professional context. Graduates of bioveterinary science programmes work in veterinary diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical and biomedical research companies, animal health companies, regulatory bodies, conservation and zoological organisations, animal rehabilitation centres and academic research. Roles include laboratory scientist, research technician, veterinary pharmaceutical sales and technical advisor, animal health consultant and conservation biologist. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in veterinary science, biomedical research, clinical animal behaviour or related biological sciences.
