BSc Building Surveying
About this course
Building surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the technical inspection, assessment and management of buildings and construction projects across their full lifecycle. Building surveyors advise on the condition of existing buildings, oversee maintenance and repair programmes, manage construction and refurbishment projects, advise on building regulations compliance and heritage conservation, and provide expert opinion on building pathology, the diagnosis of defects and the appropriate remediation strategies. The profession requires a combination of technical knowledge of construction technology, building law and professional practice skills, and it is central to the management of the UK's enormous existing building stock. At Sheffield Hallam University this programme introduces you to the full scope of the building surveying profession across a three-year full-time degree that includes a sandwich year and work-placement experience. You will study building pathology and defect analysis, construction technology, building conservation, project management, design, property law and the professional and ethical frameworks that govern surveying practice. Sheffield Hallam's strong industry connections and its location in a city undergoing significant development and regeneration enrich the practical dimensions of the programme. The placement year gives you direct professional experience within the construction or property sector. You will develop the technical knowledge to assess and advise on buildings of different ages, types and conditions, alongside the professional skills to manage projects, write technical reports and communicate effectively with clients, contractors and other built-environment professionals. Graduates typically pursue the Assessment of Professional Competence with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, qualifying as Chartered Building Surveyors, and work with property consultants, local authorities, housing associations, NHS trusts, commercial developers and construction companies. Postgraduate study in building surveying, project management or construction law is also available for those seeking further specialisation.
