BA Bulgarian and Spanish
About this course
Bulgarian and Spanish is a combination that spans two linguistically and culturally distinct parts of the world, joining a major global language with one of the principal languages of South-Eastern Europe. Spanish is spoken as a first language by over 500 million people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond, and carries with it a vast and diverse literary, cultural, and political heritage. Bulgarian is a South Slavic language, the official language of Bulgaria, and the gateway to a country with a rapidly developing economy and a long history at the crossroads of European civilisations, from the ancient Thracians through the Byzantine and Ottoman empires to the present day. At University College London, this four-year, full-time programme is taught by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, one of the largest and most distinguished departments in the UK for the study of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe. You will develop high-level proficiency in both Bulgarian and Spanish, acquiring skills in speaking, writing, reading, and translation, while also gaining deep knowledge of the literature, history, culture, and contemporary life of the countries and regions where your languages are spoken. The degree provides the opportunity to spend time in countries associated with your languages, enriching both your linguistic competence and your understanding of the societies you study. Graduates of Bulgarian and Spanish work in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpretation, cultural and educational organisations, and the civil service. Bulgaria's position within the European Union and its growing role in the European economy make proficiency in Bulgarian a genuinely distinctive professional asset, particularly combined with the global reach of Spanish. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Hispanic studies, languages, or translation, building specialist academic or professional careers.
