BA Bulgarian and Swedish
About this course
Bulgarian and Swedish represent two distinct but equally fascinating European linguistic traditions, offering access to very different cultural and historical worlds. Bulgarian is a South Slavic language, the first Slavic language to be written and codified as part of the Old Church Slavonic tradition, and it connects you to the rich history and contemporary culture of Bulgaria, a country whose position at the crossroads of Europe and the Balkans has given it a complex and often underappreciated heritage. Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken across Scandinavia, associated with a society widely recognised for its design culture, social model, and global cultural influence. At University College London, this four-year degree is taught at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, one of the largest and most distinguished departments in the UK for the study of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, the Baltics, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. You will develop language skills in both Bulgarian and Swedish alongside knowledge of the literature, history, and culture of the countries and regions where these languages are spoken. The programme is structured to develop both linguistic proficiency and deep cultural understanding, with a year abroad providing immersive experience in the relevant countries. Graduates from Bulgarian and Swedish programmes are well placed for careers in diplomacy, international business, translation and interpretation, journalism, the cultural sector, and roles in organisations with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe or Scandinavia. The rarity of this combination makes it particularly distinctive on a graduate's profile. The broad intellectual and analytical skills developed through a modern languages degree are also valued across many professions where cross-cultural understanding, close reading, and precise communication are required. Postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Scandinavian studies, translation, or international relations is a natural continuation.
