BA Business Management for the Creative Industries (Animation)
About this course
Business management for the creative industries with a specialism in animation sits at an unusual and increasingly valuable intersection. Animation is a discipline that has expanded far beyond its origins in hand-drawn film, now encompassing digital 2D, 3D, motion design, visual effects, video games and interactive media. At the same time, creative industries increasingly require their practitioners to understand business strategy, production management, marketing and the commercial environments in which creative work is commissioned, sold and distributed. This degree develops both the craft skills and the professional intelligence to succeed in that world. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement. You will study the principles of animation, including both 2D hand-drawn and 3D digital techniques, using industry-standard software and methods including the layered method and pose-to-pose animation. You will also engage with the history of animation and motion design, from its earliest forms to today's diverse styles and applications, developing the cultural and historical context that informs strong creative practice. Alongside the animation training, the business management strand equips you with knowledge of production workflows, project management, budgeting, pitching and the commercial structures of the creative industries. Graduates from this programme work across the animation industry in roles including animator, motion designer, visual effects artist, creative producer, production manager and studio manager. Many find employment in animation studios, games companies, advertising agencies, post-production facilities and broadcast organisations. The business management skills developed alongside the animation craft give graduates a significant advantage in an industry where the ability to manage projects and client relationships is as important as technical skill. Postgraduate study in animation, visual effects or creative enterprise is an option for those who want to develop their practice further.
