About this course

Business management with human resource management is a degree that prepares you for one of the most fundamental challenges in organisational life: how to attract, develop, motivate and retain the people who make organisations work. Human resource management has evolved from a primarily administrative function into a strategic discipline, concerned with how people decisions affect organisational performance and how organisations can create environments in which individuals can contribute effectively and develop professionally. The degree combines the broad management knowledge needed to understand organisations with the specialist HR knowledge needed to manage people effectively within them. At the University of Brighton, the three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation, a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you multiple opportunities to develop professional experience and to test your skills in real organisations. You will study organisational behaviour, employment law, recruitment and selection, learning and development, performance management, reward strategy and the management of change, alongside the core business management curriculum. Brighton's location on the south coast, within easy reach of London, gives access to a wide range of employers across different sectors. The degree prepares you for careers in HR management, talent acquisition, organisational development, learning and development, people analytics, employment relations and management consulting. HR roles exist in every sector of the economy, from small businesses to large multinationals, and in the public sector and third sector as well as the private sector. Professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development is the standard route to formal recognition as an HR professional, and many graduates pursue CIPD qualifications alongside or after their degree. Postgraduate study in HRM, organisational psychology or business administration is also a well-established path.
