MA Celtic Civilisation/Theology & Religious Studies
About this course
Celtic civilisation and theology with religious studies makes for an intellectually demanding combination, drawing together the material, literary, and spiritual dimensions of human culture across centuries and continents. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history of the Celtic peoples, tracing the development of their societies, languages, literature, material culture, art, and religion from the earliest times on the European continent through to the present-day British Isles. Theology and religious studies, meanwhile, asks how human beings have understood the sacred, the divine, and the moral across the world's religious traditions, examining texts, rituals, institutions, and ideas with both historical rigour and philosophical care. The University of Glasgow offers this combined degree on a part-time basis, which makes it well suited to students who need flexibility around work or family commitments. A year abroad option is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner university and develop both your academic and personal perspective through extended engagement with a different environment. Across the programme you will develop skills in close reading of primary sources in their historical context, the analysis of material culture, and the critical examination of religious and philosophical texts. The combination asks you to think across languages, periods, and traditions, developing an unusual breadth of cultural and intellectual reference. Graduates with this combination of subjects go on to careers in academic research, teaching, heritage, museum and archive work, journalism, the civil service, and the voluntary sector, particularly in organisations working in the areas of culture, community, and inter-faith dialogue. The interpretive, research, and communication skills the degree develops transfer well across a wide range of professional contexts. Postgraduate study in Celtic studies, theology, religious studies, or related humanities fields is a natural further step for those wishing to pursue these interests at greater depth.
