About this course

Celtic studies and theology and religious studies form a pairing that opens onto some of the most compelling questions about how belief, language and culture have shaped the peoples of the British Isles and Europe. Celtic studies provides the opportunity to combine language study in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish or other Celtic languages with engagement across the medieval and modern Celtic cultures of the British Isles, from the earliest recorded poetry and mythology to the living traditions of contemporary Celtic communities. Theology and religious studies brings systematic analytical tools to the examination of religious belief, practice and institution, asking how religious traditions have formed, how they have been challenged and how they continue to shape human life and meaning. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme draws on Glasgow's strong tradition in both disciplines, giving you the flexibility to study around other commitments while engaging seriously with texts, ideas and cultural histories that span more than two millennia. You will encounter primary sources in Celtic languages and in theological texts, developing the close reading and interpretive skills that both fields demand. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study elsewhere, potentially including a Celtic-speaking region or an institution with complementary theological strengths. The combination of linguistic, cultural and theological training develops analytical and interpretive skills that are valued across a range of professional contexts. Graduates pursue careers in education, heritage and cultural institutions, religious organisations, broadcasting, journalism, chaplaincy and community development, as well as in archives, libraries and the civil service. The ability to work across languages and traditions, to engage with complex texts and to appreciate the cultural dimensions of belief and practice is increasingly sought in an interconnected world. Postgraduate study in Celtic languages and literatures, theology, religious studies or medieval studies is a well-established path for those who wish to pursue research or specialist professional roles.
