MA(SocSci) Central & East European Studies with Quantitative Methods
About this course
Central and East European studies is a discipline that engages with one of the most complex and consequential regions in modern world history, encompassing societies shaped by empires, revolutions, wars, and political transitions that continue to define much of contemporary European politics. It draws on history, political science, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies to build a rich understanding of the region's diversity and of the forces that have connected and divided its peoples. Combining this area focus with quantitative methods adds a further and increasingly essential dimension, developing your ability to work rigorously with data, evidence, and numerical reasoning. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme is part of the institution's Q-Step Centre provision, which specialises in developing students' quantitative skills and their capacity to handle and interpret data. You will study the history, politics, languages, and cultures of Central and Eastern Europe alongside training in statistical and quantitative methods that give your regional knowledge an analytical rigour it would otherwise lack. A year abroad is a central feature of the programme, providing immersive experience in the region that deepens linguistic and cultural understanding beyond what academic study alone can achieve. The entry tariff of 232 points reflects the demanding intellectual preparation the programme expects. Graduates from Central and East European studies programmes with quantitative skills are well positioned for careers in government, diplomacy, international organisations, think tanks, journalism, and the intelligence services, as well as in NGOs and development agencies with a focus on the region. The quantitative component opens additional pathways in policy analysis, economic consultancy, and data-focused research roles. Postgraduate study in European politics, international relations, area studies, or social research methods is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue an academic career.
