BEng Chemical Engineering
About this course
Chemical engineering is the engineering discipline that scales chemistry from laboratory discovery to industrial production. It is concerned with the design and operation of processes that convert raw materials and energy into the higher-value products that societies depend on: pharmaceuticals, food and drink, fuels, polymers, lubricants, batteries, semiconductors, paints, and much more. Chemical engineers must understand the processes that occur at the molecular and small scale and translate that understanding into the design of plant and equipment that can operate safely and economically at production scale. At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year full-time BEng gives you a rigorous grounding in the core tools of the chemical engineer: applied sciences, engineering principles, technology, and the financial and management skills needed to operate and lead in industrial settings. You will study thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering, and process design, developing the quantitative and analytical capabilities that define the discipline. You will learn not only how to identify how materials can be converted into functional products but also how to construct, operate, and manage the facilities in which that conversion takes place, including the safety, environmental, and regulatory dimensions that govern industrial chemical processes. QUB's chemical engineering department has strong connections to Northern Ireland's pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries, providing a context in which your engineering education is informed by real industrial practice. Graduates go on to careers as chemical engineers in the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, energy, food processing, environmental, and materials industries, working in process design, plant operation, quality assurance, project engineering, and management. The BEng provides a foundation for progression to chartered engineer status and is well regarded for entry to postgraduate study or further professional training. Chemical engineering graduates are consistently among the most employable in any engineering discipline.
