About this course

Chemistry is the science of molecules and materials: the discipline that explains how matter is composed at the atomic level, how chemical reactions transform one set of substances into another, and how those transformations can be harnessed to create everything from medicines and polymers to semiconductors and advanced materials. It is a science with a well-developed theoretical base, rooted in quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, and it is also central to modern life in a practical sense, underpinning the pharmaceutical industry, materials science, agriculture, energy and environmental science. At the University of Glasgow you will study chemistry with European placement over five years of full-time study, combining a rigorous chemistry education with a substantial period of study or research experience in continental Europe. The European placement gives you direct experience of chemistry as it is practised in a different academic or industrial context, developing your professional network, your language skills and your intercultural competency alongside your chemical knowledge. You will develop expertise in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, building from foundational principles to advanced topics in areas such as new materials, synthesis, spectroscopy and computational chemistry. The typical tariff of 216 reflects the academic demands of a programme that combines intensive chemistry study with significant international engagement. Chemistry graduates with international experience are particularly well placed for careers in multinational pharmaceutical and chemical companies, European research institutions, and international careers in consultancy, materials science and technology. Many graduates pursue doctoral research in chemistry or related fields, either in the UK or on the continent, building on the research experience gained during the European placement. Others move into finance, patent law, science communication or data science, where the quantitative and analytical training of a chemistry degree is valued. Professional accreditation routes are available through the Royal Society of Chemistry for graduates who meet the relevant academic criteria.
